ATHENS, Greece (LOOTPRESS) — In a headline-grabbing case blending ancient tradition with modern technology, a Greek woman has reportedly filed for divorce after claiming an artificial intelligence tool exposed her husband’s alleged affair—through a digital interpretation of coffee grounds.
As reported by Greek City Times, the woman, married for over 12 years and mother to two children, turned to ChatGPT for what she called a “modern take” on tasseography—the centuries-old practice of reading coffee grounds to foretell the future. She allegedly uploaded images of her and her husband’s coffee cup remnants and asked the AI chatbot to interpret the patterns.
The results, she claims, were startling. According to her account, ChatGPT pointed to infidelity, warning of a younger woman with intentions to break up their home. The bot reportedly identified the husband’s supposed “destined partner” as a mysterious woman with a name starting with the letter “E.” Her own reading, she said, predicted betrayal and domestic upheaval.
Her husband, speaking to a local Greek television channel, dismissed the accusation as “nonsense,” attributing the situation to his wife’s growing fascination with internet trends. “At first, I laughed it off,” he said. “But then she told me to leave, informed our children we were divorcing, and next thing I know, a lawyer was calling me. That’s when I realized this wasn’t just some TikTok phase.”
The woman formally served divorce papers just three days later, rejecting any discussion of a mutual separation.
This isn’t her first brush with unconventional beliefs, according to the husband. He recalled a period when she consulted an astrologer and followed the predictions for nearly a year. His attorney has since clarified that AI-generated readings—whether from tasseography or otherwise—hold no legal merit in Greek courts. “An AI chatbot cannot serve as evidence of adultery. He remains innocent unless proven otherwise,” the lawyer stated.
The peculiar case has ignited widespread debate on Greek social media, with reactions ranging from amusement to concern over the growing reliance on artificial intelligence in personal decision-making. Legal experts, meanwhile, warn that while AI can be entertaining or even insightful, its use in legal and emotional matters must be approached with caution.
