The Red Raiders finished the five-inning day with four batters connecting on three or more hits, the program’s largest margin of victory in a tournament game since 2001, their most runs scored in an inning, 11, since 2013 and a Big 12 Tournament record in runs, according to Tech Athletics.
“They’re out here hitting hundreds of balls this morning,” said Gerry Glasco, Tech head coach, during a mid-game interview with ESPN, “and they just go out in the game and play with confidence.”
When the third frame came around, Tech already had three runs on the board from a dominant 34-pitch second inning against Sun Devil pitcher Meika Lauppe.
Head coach Megan Bartlett went to her bullpen in an attempt to nip Tech’s momentum, but Red Raider outfielder Mihyia Davis hammered Sun Devil relief pitcher Cambree Creager’s first pitch to deep right field.
Arizona State rotated two pitchers during the frame, but Tech connected on five first-pitch hits and nine hits with runners in scoring position during the 11-run inning. At times during the 25-minute frame, Arizona State outfielders grew so exhausted with chasing ground balls that they jogged to the still-dribbling ball, ultimately allowing for Tech baserunners to earn its extra bases.
“I just wanted them (Red Raiders) to relax, have fun today and trust their training,” Glasco said with a wide grin.
Tech designated player/pitcher NiJaree Canady set the tone in the second inning with the first run of the afternoon and continued the dominance during her four innings pitched.
The Red Raiders took starting pitcher Meika Lauppe into a full count three times to start the second frame before Canady hammered an RBI double. Her slap to left field barely cleared the glove of Arizona State utility AJ Murphy, who leaped and fully extended her mitt to the sky.
In the circle, the junior right-hander, who pitched and batted for the 24th time this season, according to Tech Athletics, tossed a shutout with one hit allowed while striking out five batters.
Riding its largest victory against a Big 12 opponent in 2025, Tech will face the winner of No. 2-seeded University of Arizona and No. 3-seeded Iowa State University at 11 a.m. Saturday for the Big 12 Championship.
