Standing desks are a beautiful thing. Even though no one knows for sure whether having a standing desk is better for your overall health, it’s nice to have the option to sit or stand over the course of a work day. So why not just go with a standing desk, right? The astronomical price—that’s why.
We don’t know about you, but we’ve always wondered why standing desks are so darn expensive. Up until the last few years, the most popular standing desks ran well over $700. That’s not always a reasonable amount to spend on a desk, especially if you’re an entrepreneur or startup employee.
Fear not—we found a handful of more reasonably priced standing desks (and standing desk alternatives) for under $500. And since you’ll be standing anyway, feel free to walk over and give us a high five. 🙂
Oristand, $25 (seriously!)
Oristand is just about as no-fuss and easy-on-the-wallet as a standing desk comes. It’s designed to keep your workspace flexible, folding out onto your regular desk in seconds. No assembly, screws, or wordless IKEA instruction manuals necessary (though we love those). This industrial grade cardboard folding desk is 100% recyclable–so you can feel great about saving yourself some money and saving the planet some trees. We don’t hate it!
Autonomous Sit-to-Stand Desk, $299
Holy standing desk gods! Autonomous Desk is one of the best we’ve seen at its price point. With a heavyweight industrial steel frame and stunning wood and bamboo tops, this desk can hold 300 lbs of your stuff and look good doing it. There’s a “Smart Keypad” that remembers your ideal sitting and standing height to maximize for increased movement and reduced body pressure.
Also, if you’ve ever wondered about the economics behind standing desks (we certainly have), Autonomous breaks it down:
“Typically, office furniture is marked up 4–6 times by the time they’re sold. The means you’re mostly paying for gimmicks, unfair retail markups, sales commissions, wholesale’s profits and middlemen costs. Autonomous is not a reseller. We source all components directly ourselves. We assemble and test our products in our own facility in California.”
Thanks for making us savvier (and less broke) standing desk buyers, Autonomous!
Varidesk, $395
Varidesk is a cool alternative to a full-blown standing desk. For one thing, it arrives in the box already fully assembled (hooray!). But, unlike many other standing desk companies, there are several Varidesk options so you can find one that fits your needs precisely. Here’s the whole series:
The company’s mission is to help you feel more energized, focused, free of back pain, and generally healthier. Give it a try if you’re in the market for a nice standing desk converter—you won’t regret it.
Ikea Bekant Standing Desk, $489
Though this is a bit pricier than what you’d normally pay for a desk at IKEA, but it certainly still falls under the average price for a standing desk these days. Key features include: electrical height adjustment (22" to 48"), generous work surface, and the ability to alternate between standing and sitting desk easily (and relatively quietly).
The product’s designers, Karl Malmvall and Eva Lilja Löwenhielm, said, “Our goal was to make flexible desk combinations that encourage collaborations, meetings and creativity. The desks come in different sizes and shapes — you can use one alone or combine them to suit your needs.”
Jaswig, $299
You know, just in case buying a standing desk for yourself wasn’t enough, you can now buy one for every person in your family. Jaswig offers standing desks in three different sizes (including the little human size, pictured above). All things considered, the price point is reasonable and the desk is beautifully designed. You’ll certainly be getting jealous stares when people spot one of these in your home or office. Heck, even we’re sending your future Jaswig desk-owning self a jealous stare right now. 🙂
