Glasgow MSP Ivan McKee has praised Glasgow Kelvin College for its “crucial role in preparing Scotland’s future workforce” following a visit to its Springburn Campus to see the college’s pioneering work in green skills, engineering, and inclusive education.
The Minister for Public Finance toured the college’s Air Conditioning and Refrigeration and Building Services Engineering workshops, and held a first meeting with new Principal Joanna Campbell, who took up post last month.
Kelvin is home to Scotland’s only college apprenticeship training programme in air conditioning and refrigeration. Mr McKee met fourth-year apprentices in the workshop, who shared how college learning equips them with the latest knowledge – particularly around environmental initiatives – which they in turn, take back to their workplaces.
In the Building Services Engineering workshop, he also spoke to third-year apprentices about the value of cross-functional skills in service and maintenance, and how these improve productivity and adaptability for industry.
The politician then spent time with the ESOL Youth Progression group – young people aged 16–19 who are settling in Glasgow and working to improve their English to access qualifications and employment. Mr McKee heard how tailored support like this is helping unlock talent and contribute to economic growth in Glasgow’s north and east.
Mr McKee said: “Glasgow Kelvin College is delivering on some of the most pressing priorities of our time – equipping young people with skills for the green economy, supporting new Scots into education and work, and contributing to a more inclusive and prosperous Glasgow.
“It’s inspiring to see such targeted investment having real-world impact.”
Ms Campbell added: “We are proud of the role Kelvin plays in supporting, Net Zero goals, eradicating child poverty, and creating inclusive pathways into work. Our apprenticeships and ESOL provision are powerful examples of how colleges can drive regional economic growth and improve quality of life.
“It was a privilege to show Mr McKee the impact of these programmes first hand, and his reaction to our work is testament to the contribution our students and staff make in these essential areas.”
