The Friends of the Ritter Public Library’s annual Book Sale runs from May 15-17 in the library community room, 5680 Liberty Ave. in Vermilion.
The sale features a wide variety of books and other materials available for a discounted rate which will help continue programming and support for the library, according to Sheryl Gregg, a member of the Friends of the Ritter Public Library and chairperson of the Book Sale.
The sale features hundreds of books in many genres, both fiction and nonfiction, as well as vintage items, audiobooks, puzzles, CDs and more for a donation, excluding some specialty items, Gregg said.
“It’s take what you want and the donation benefits the library,” she said. “We do have some items that have some prices, and a lot of make an offer.”
All of the items were donated, from the public and the library, Gregg said.
Oftentimes, the Ritter Library will donate old books that are not used in circulation upon ordering new ones, she said.
The Friends of the Ritter Public Library also have an ongoing book sale within the library, Gregg said.
“We keep all the books that are donated by the public and by the library throughout the year,” she said. “Everything we have, here has been donated by someone.”
The money generated from the fundraiser will help benefit the library.
The Friends of the Ritter Public Library help provide various items, programs and services, according to Gregg.
In the past, she said the organization has helped with getting furniture for the library patio, the summer reading program, books to Vermilion Local Schools students at literacy events and other needs outside of the budget.
This year, Gregg said the Friends of the Ritter Public Library, in conjunction with the Ritter Public Library Foundation, will assist with storybook trails in Showse Park and Sherrod Park.
“When we have the money, we provide it for them to do those special projects and that is what the money from this sale does,” she said. “We’re very passionate about getting books into people’s hands, especially children; that’s our goal.”
Gregg said the book sale has been successful since its inception in the 1990s, and with the help of dedicated volunteers.
The Book Sale has helped attract new library patrons from other communities, including Elyria, Sandusky and Amherst, she said.
“No matter what we ask them to do, we have several volunteers that will do it,” Gregg said. “They are very, very hardworking and very passionate about making money for the library.
“We’re very happy to provide this for the library, and I’m very happy to chair it this year.”
